Hurricane Sandy filled the roads on the Far Rockaway peninsula with sand, debris and downed power lines. As roads became cleared, the MTA began operating local buses during daylight hours, until recently when more lighting has become available and they’ve been able to run later buses. And while subway service was restored to most of the city, the A train, the only subway in the area, remains too damaged to reopen.

From Coney Island to Breezy Point tens of thousands homes are without power and either flooded or uninhabitable. That means many residents have relocated. And many hotels in Brooklyn are booked full.

Sanitation trucks rumbled down mud-caked streets past downed power lines as thick sheets of sleet fell on the few residents roaming the streets of Far Rockaway Wednesday as a Nor’easter began bearing down.

In the aftermath of Sandy, residents of the Rockaway have been struggling with a lack of power, heat and gas. An effort to making voting easier, however, was just as problem plagued.

A week after Sandy many elderly residents in Far Rockaway are still without power. Mayor Michael Bloomberg was met with anger when he toured the area over the weekend. Some supplies are trickling in, but elderly residents are cold and worried about the freezing nighttime temperatures.

Power has been restored to parts of Manhattan, but in Far Rockaway, Queens, it’s cold and dark. The NYPD says its adding extra patrols and lighting after reports of looting, but residents are still anxious and fearful.
