So...no, but. I live in Staten Island, and I know I can get a tree cheaper there (about $15 less for a tree this size), but I had my car in Brooklyn this week and knew my fiancee and I were going to be busy for several more days before we would be able to get together and pick a tree out, so I stopped at a tree stand in a nice brooklyn nabe (because the trees aren't as nice in the cheaper hoods, like sunset park) and we just bought one and took it home that night to get the process going. I am happy with the tree, a Fraser Fir, and I needed the convenience this year, so I ate the price.

Yes, $30 seems alright, but $10 for the stand seemed inflated. I wonder whether all the trees being sold in the city are coming from a small number of farms (and through a small number of distributers), or lots of small growers?

Yes, I do. I got a Douglas Fir, which is one of the cheaper trees. Home Depot puts them out by height, so mine was listed as being "6 to 7 feet". There were not many people working the tree section of the store, so we had to carry it to the checkout area. But they had employees to snip off the lower branches, chainsaw off the bottom so it would drink water, wrap it, and help fasten it to our roof. It would likely have been only slightly more expensive ($35 to $40) if we went to the plant nursery closer to our house.

No... I think the prices have about doubled since last year, and I do not understand why. Re "goes into the price of a tree" I-imagine what has always gone into getting a tree. Most come from Maine, Vt. and N.H. and have to be cut and shipped somehow. Those start shedding needles a few days after you get it. They are as expensive, if not more, that the ones cut locally. Or the cut it yourslef trees. For a six ft. tree one now has to pay $60-70. It is very sad that at Christmas time there is still price gouging going on!

No, it's ridiculously high and there was no negotiating. Definitely lost the folded money out of my pocket. But, it was for my daughter, so what's a mother to do?

It was the first real tree I've ever bought. I thought it was a good deal. My wife scoffed a little at the price, so I think she thought it was a little high.

What goes into the price, how much the farms sell them for, trucking them into the city, probably some storage place in the city or nearby, driving them from that storage place to all the stands, and paying the guys who sell them. Also they've got to buy all that netting stuff.

I feel the price was fair. I always feel so bad for the young Canadians who work the stand. This is the third year, so in some strange way, buying a tree from them feels like part of the holiday tradition.
