Yes, I think it was fair. I also saw cut ones cheaper at places like Food Maxx. But, I got a nice, fresh, fairly acquired tree. I also got a LIVE one this year, so hopefully it lasts longer than a year. :)

Yes! It's a beautiful douglas fur that my family cut down. The money goes to a small family owned farm on their 3rd year in business in our town. In a season where so much money goes to big box stores for things produced miles away from us, I have no problem seeking out a local grower to give my money too - even if it's more expensive (which in this case it is only slightly above average)

A similar sized tree down the block was going for $120. When I asked the more expensive vendor about the huge price difference he said the cheaper stand was "illegal."

Turns out the more expensive vendor was lying, under the 1938 'coniferous tree exception' law, vendors in NYC do not need a permit: http://www.nytimes.com/2003/12/21/nyregion/coping-ye-olde-coniferous-tree-exception.html

Tree was actually free . It was the bottom 5' of what was probably a 12' tree. We tied bows to the top to create a perfect 7' tree...

Fair? I have no idea what the cost of raising, harvesting and transporting the tree to Manhattan was or how many employees work the stand (I think I counted 3) so can't assess if the mark-up and total cost was fair. I paid about $10-$15 more than I expected/wanted to pay.

yes, especially considering it was to raise money for the daycare facilities! Tree freshness, shape, species of pine/fir, scent etc are all important factors of tree desirability.
