New Music from Ireland to Mark the Easter Rising
On Sunday, April 24, Ireland will mark the 100th anniversary of the Easter Rising. The uprising itself was unsuccessful, but its brutal and deadly suppression by the British galvanized the Irish nationalist movement and led to the eventual formation of the modern state of Ireland six years later.
In Ireland, parades and other events have been going on for the past few months, and with the actual anniversary coming this week, New Sounds gets into the act by presenting a whole week of programs surveying the Irish new music landscape. Based on conversations recorded in Dublin, Belfast, and Cork, this weeklong series offers a glimpse into a thriving and diverse music scene.Â
