We know we've got some creative, resourceful listeners. So, inspired by the publication of our new book Spark: How Creativity Works, we asked listeners to showcase their creativity in our Material Mashup contest, and invited them to share with us examples of something creative they made from unexpected materials. The contest is now over, but you can still share your creations here. We love seeing your mashups!
Check out all of the great entries we received below!

What is my inspiration?
-- THE ART SURROUNDING ME --
I so enjoy watching as the changing light paints the simple objects in our daily lives-a never ending gallery of delight! I've lived with chronic, painful & disabling illness for thirty years. At the moment I click the shutter there is no past, no future, no physical pain, no mental anguish. My mind is empty and for that moment I am fully (if fleetingly) at peace.

This is system of connecting plastic cups explores the qualities of space, color and light and was part of my Freshman Architecture Studio at RPI. This piece is assembled by interlocking pinwheel shaped modules without the aid of glue or mechanical fasteners.

You interviewed me May 11, 2007 about the Threshold Choir. Since that time we have grown amazingly...our 120th choir just started this week. Our mission is to sing at the bedsides of people who are dying, in coma, newborns, children in hospital and with women who are incarcerated and people who are grieving.
Since this hasn't been done in an organized way before that I know of, I think it fits your criteria...A creative act (singing original songs), making kindness audible and showing how true service heals everyone - the giver and the receiver equally. Thank you for the opportunity for a report back. thresholdchoir.org
In the photo you'll see 5 choir members

I am a photographer and social artist who has started printing on various surfaces, including pearl, fabric, wallpaper, and most recently, ceramic and glass tiles.
The photo-based tiles are used in interior design projects, including kitchen back-splash, bathrooms, etc.
In addition, I refashion 1x1" glass tiles, as depicted in the attachment, in to rings.
Please let me know if you would like more information.

THE PATRIOTS -- How much can our Clutter Utter?

A series called "the Drill Team" made out of vintage oil and gas cans. A play on words making a comment on our dependency on oil and cheering for more drilling.

I made a series of life size dresses out of woven tin cans. The series was called "The Jones Girls" after my grandmother and her sisters. They were all wonderful cooks and the kitchen was the gathering place in their homes.

This is a a mixed media work that I made from parts from a broken printer and the leg from an old piano. The figure is clay and copper with ink detail. I use reclaimed materials in every work, a limitless supply of art materials goes to the landfill every day and its rewarding to turn some of it into something new.

My friends know that I LOVE good dark chocolate, so they find me the most amazing bars from all over the world. I started collecting the wrappers because they were often works of art on their own. One day I saw a collage in a coffee shop and said,'I could do better'. I hate when people say that without putting up the goods. So, I made these three paintings and they were the beginning of a new passion. Thirty plus Chocolate Paintings and counting! I need to diet, but these paintings are delicious...

I'm a toothpick sculptor and I use thousands and thousands of toothpicks to create shapes based on the orbits of the planets and the constellations.

In 2008, I built a floating cloud sculpture out of more than 1,000 plastic water bottles. The sculpture circumnavigated the town of Vrindavan, India, on the Yamuna River, bringing to life a local myth about water resources. The Yamuna is considered to be a goddess, but at the same time it is terribly polluted.

I hope that this is a little self explanatory, if not the title begins with Ph, this being version 1 of a series. I like to build wind chimes around themes. If you can't see it, the top 4 items from which the disks hang are repeated inside where they strike the disks in the wind.

Again, our discarded objects continue to tell our tales, especially the ones we long to forget.

I made a menorah out of used Porsche valves. At a high end car repair place, which I visited with my then 7 year old niece, they offered us some used valves. I took one; she didn't want any. I stuck on my mantle, and it gradually dawned on me that it was a thing of beauty. Once I felt that way, I kicked myself for having turned down the other seven, and started acquiring more, which took some effort (my first-ever ebay purchase was some Porsche valves). (Mercedes valves are also beautiful, most of the rest that I've seen range from pedestrian to junky.) The question arose, what to do with them, and one day, the answer just occurred to me. I did some more searching for something that would make a good stand for them. The ring comes from a Ford transmission.
