I am constantly on the lookout for objects for my found object jewelry. In this piece I used a small globe that I've had for years, parts from an old adding machine that someone was discarding (for the legs), my cousin's plastic doll teapot and a tiny watch part for the spinner on top of the hat. I wove the beaded necklace from inexpensive glass beads that cost about &3/ Alice Sprintzen

Each year I construct handmade holiday ornaments out of recycled material. The materials used are from items around the house & yard (OK, I live in NYC...the streets).

Items include: a tuna can, cardboard, paint from the paint bin, canvas scraps (I'm an artist), twigs, branches, acorns scavenged from Central Park (I made sure to scrub all of the meth off) and craft paper I shredded from the supermarket bag.

Napkin rings - Cut a 1 1/2 inch cardboard piece from a paper towel or toilet paper holder. Give a piece of ribbon, felt, or scrap fabric onto it. (I used greenfelt). Glue colorful buttons on top.

Take any large can this is a five ltr olive oil when finished with the contents. Take can opener and remove the top. Take some guerrilla gaffer tape and wrap it around the top to protect you from shop edges. These can be used as trash bins or I use it for gathering stuff up around the house.
if you were the crafty type you could decorate your but I consider it to be repurposed not recycling

When Nature Calls...(for the daughter of a gastroenterologist)

This is a gift for my good friend Dayna Goldfine, whose father is a gastroenterologist. One doesn't have to know Dayna long before she regales you with stories her father told sitting around the family dinner table. For example, there was the distraught patient who carried around a tape recorder in his back pocket to record his flatulence. I thought this gift would bring back fond memories of home and hearth for Dayna.

I created my Cheap 'n' Crafty Xmas Tree/Hanukkah Bush starting with an armature made of chopsticks and a paper towel tube. I cut, folded and fringed green construction paper and attached them to broken-in-half chopsticks, poked holes in the tube and stuck the sticks in the holes to create the branches. Then I cut up the chopsticks' colorful wrappers into little circles to make ornaments for my tree. Yarn serves as my garland, and cotton balls for snow. The Christmas Tree can be converted into a Hanukkah Bush by taking off the star that's on it now and putting the Menorah you see in the slot where the star is now. My 15 year old daughter made this stunning hair clip after she had seen them in a boutique for nearly $40. We live on a Lavender Farm in central NJ and we raise chickens and Guinea Fowl. They have beautiful feathers that end up all over their coop, in the case of the chickens, and under the trees that the Guinea Fowl roost in. She collects the feathers and washes them and soaks them in rubbing alcohol to make sure they are free from anything funky. She cuts a piece of heavy felt (less than $.25) and cuts 2 slits in it to thread a large barrette (12 for $1.00) and then she glues the feathers to the felt.
The one pictured is made primarily from our Guinea fowl Carl's feathers and from Alberta our late Polish crested chicken.
While the materials probably cost less than a dollar the feeling of pride and accomplishment my young teen has in making something so fabulous is PRICELESS!

A dollar, decoupage and a dream. My theme: Deconstructionist Beauty---If Picasso Were Serving Tea.
Could this simple wooden tray on clearance at the craft store give birth to a statement making yet useful work of art? In the spirit of the season, I chose to believe.
Several hours later, a hand inflamed with Carpel-Tunnel and a living room which looked as if Vogue, Elle and Roaman’s catalogue premiered the fall fashions while paying the price for bad sushi, I had created the twisted splendor you see here. As a side note, the tray is well shellacked and would hold Tim Burton’s cocoa and cookies quite nicely.

Are you a fancy lady? A sporty gal with style? You should be able to enjoy watching the game while still keeping a tidy coffee table and your feminine flair. The answer to your woes---The Sporty Lady’s Remote Boat! Never again will you wonder “Where is that darn clicker?” or “Why can’t I watch TV and still walk that cutting edge of home decor?” Witness the perfect polygamous marriage of found objects, fashion and function.

This timeless treasure was invented when one of a pair of pumps went bust, and I just couldn’t accept that the only fate for the orphan shoe was the garbage chute. In a lucky coincidence the three remaining silver balls holding up my rickety lamp needed removing and voila---a perfect way to give a polished base to a delightful remote boat. But it needed something special, some panache…… A quick browse at the dollar revealed a mini bowling set to die for and my vision was complete! With some elbow grease and a hot glue gun I was able to capture the motion and excitement of “the game” while still retaining function and class…....well, in a thrifty-crafty-kooky kind of way…..

I crocheted this fun and fabulous little purse for one of my girlfriends out of black plastic bags from the bodega with yellow Gristedes-bag accents.

This handbag is perfect for an afternoon of museum hopping or a night on the town -- just the right size for wallet, cellphone, and a lipstick. Kinda young, kinda now...!

Recycled Retainer Ornament
Here's a very simple project for any novice crafter made poor by their children's orthodontic needs.
It's always been difficult for me to dispose of an outgrown retainer (because no one ever throws out a retainer on purpose!) With a coating of Elmer's glue, gold glitter (I prefer Martha Stewart's florentine gold, so fine it's like fairy dust) and a velvet ribbon, it becomes a stunningly beautiful and unique holiday ornament. Surely your orthodontist will love it special family members will too!

This season give the gift of the “Bad Boyfriend Bracelet” to both commiserate with your friends and remind others to steer clear of these fatal types. The bracelet, made of the finest packing peanuts with a classy sharpie touch, paper clips, and pearl beads, features 3 boyfriends to steer clear of: the shady hipster, the workaholic (who looks suspiciously like Hitler but believe me that wasn’t my intention), and the undead boyfriend.
