#3533: Sir John Tavener, a New Sounds Tribute
Born in London on Jan. 28, 1944 and knighted in 2000, Tavener was that rare classical composer whose music appealed to non-classical listeners. Rather than subscribing to the academic school of atonal works, he drew on orthodox chant, Sufi music, the English bell-ringing tradition, and texts from a variety of mystics, both Western and Eastern. For this New Sounds, listen to highlights from his major works, including “Ikon Of Light,” for chorus and string trio, “Eternity’s Sunrise” (dedicated to the late Diana) for soprano and chiming bells, along with his work, "Song for Athene," which was played at the funeral of Princess Diana, you heard his. That, and more.
