Rosie O'Donnell

This week, Alec sits down with Rosie O’Donnell who says she “never wanted to be a talk show host …  I wanted to be on Broadway…I wanted to be a Bette Midler backup singer, one of the Harlettes.”

And for over three decades, Rosie has done a lot of things – she’s been a standup comic, a Star Search contestant, an actress, a talk show host, a philanthropist, an activist, a magazine editor, a blogger, a Broadway and television producer, and above all, a mom to five. The latest child, Rosie tells Alec, "rebirthed" her.

On changes in the acceptance of gay actors during the arc of her long career now, she says, "To think that in my lifetime, in my career, that you can be an out performer/actor playing against type – Neil Patrick Harris playing a womanizer on that show, being out and married with twin boys – and it doesn't hurt your career. It doesn't do anything. So in a way it's the most beautifully astounding, inspirational thing that I can think about in my 51 years of living."

I've never been an O'Donnell fan, but this was a really good interview. Alec actually let her do most of the talking...or maybe she was shoving her fist into his mouth.

I love ROSIE

Great interview. I'm surprised Mr. Baldwin didn't push her on the Sept. 11 conspiracy issue. I'm also surprised there are no comments about this. It's interesting that someone who seems so down to earth can not just believe but perpetuate such lies.

we do indeed live in a stupid world, if we can't wrap our heads around the notion that words are given meaning by their context, and the history of the person using them. to compare what Alec has said, and throw that into a blender with "that cooking lady" and others;is utterly moronic. Anderson Cooper is quite the fool.

How does Rosie feel about Alec's gay slurs and threats of assault being hurled at a reporter?

Jun. 28 2013 02:26 PM

This has changed my opinion of Rosie. In a good way. Thanks to all.

Have loved her since I first saw her on VH1. My mom used to videotape the "cute little lesbian VJ" and mail me the tapes since I didn't get VH1 at my house. I've been extremely proud to call myself a fan all of these years, and I've admired and appreciated all of the things she's stood for. She seems like an amazing woman and she's still funny as hell. Thanks, Rosie!

Rosie is an innate teacher; she teaches by example, showing us how to do what's next for all of us. Whether it raising our kids or being political.

What a fantastic interview! I remember when you were on Rosie's show and talked about a sitcom. I would kill to see your idea of Gleason with you and Rosie. You two have amazing chemistry! Love you both...

long overdue interview - rosie is far and beyond an exceptional person with a very gripping life story. she's got gusto. a true new yorker.

Jun. 26 2013 10:45 AM

btw-she is nice and more. being "nicey nice" sweet light and pleasant,is not really, how good deep moral people act. she can be in peoples faces when needed, but she's not gratuitous about it. that's real nice, not Martha stewart,BS creepy stepford "nice".
