Chinatown in August 2011. Thousands of people squeeze past one another at warp speed on the narrow streets of Chinatown. But on this day I saw one man pausing, alone, to rest before heading underground.

You're looking up at the elevated walkway at the Queensboro Plaza station in Queens. I took this on a sweltering June evening in 2011. This area takes on an even seedier air as night progresses, but you can always find a bit of celebrating going on (hence the Dunkin' Donuts flags.

I took this photo after returning from an appointment in Brooklyn, a borough I rarely visit. The man standing on the platform in the afternoon sun reminded me that the subway also travels above ground in places (as it does at this Church Avenue station).
Also, his leaning figure gave me the impression that he was reaching for something, perhaps searching -- and it matched my mood on that day.

I just loved the colors and the design of something that we look at every day and that is a very functional machine. It's a small piece of what makes the subway great.

From a recent iPhone series in which I am attempting to show the frenetic pace of the subway and life in the City.

iPhone 'hip shot' Feb 2011, Manhattan. I flashed on the rapport in colors of the bag & the device, and in the casual irony relating "Victoria's Secret", the anonymity of the individuals and the privacy or otherwise of communicating electronically in public spaces. But most of all that the subway offers up slices of visual life which could inspire narratives of all kinds, or simply be slices.

I am constantly taking photos in the subway with my iPhone. I took this because both of the subjects, like most people on the subway today, are "wired" in their own world. And, of course, I could not resist that Tatoo.

This was taken in the late 70s. I took it because I thought it was a universal image of what the subway looked like then and all of the people, except the woman opposite me, who knew I was taking the photo, were wearing their NY Subway anonimity face.

This woman was sitting across from me, but I couldn't tell if she was looking at me through those glasses of hers. I liked the connection between the words on the poster behind her and her physical demeanor; the slouch, the grumpy face, the look she's (apparently) giving me. To me, she's a real beautiful New Yorker.

I shot this this past August.

I took this at the Columbus Circle station on the A line this past June and what it said to me was the whole "hurry up and wait" mentality of the NYC subway system. Trains move fast (most of the time) and many of us have to wait constantly. To me, there was a nice contrast between the waiting guy and the speeding train. What's he waiting for? Did he just miss the train? Probably not since he looks so relaxed. Relaxed? In the subway?

That's what caught my eye.
