This photograph was made in the mid-1980's.
It's been a long time since I've been in New York; I moved south to North Carolina from my native New Jersey in 1989. I cut my teeth as a photographer in NYC, and learned indelible lessons at exhibitions of work by the medium's masters at museums and galleries there. My memories—of the city and of a formative time in my life—are in my photographs. They help me remember.

This was taken the day after it was announced that Barrack Obama had won the 2008 election. I had flown up to NYC for short vacation in the city. This gentleman caught my eye and I just thought that there was something somewhat iconic about this scene.

This was very early one morning, on the way to the airport.
What's it say about New York? We need more sleep!

My daughter loves to climb, and had just descended from one of those newish self-serve turnstiles.
What's it say about New York? Filthy and fun!

I had just told my boyfriend, also a photographer, that I was done shooting for the day. I had put the Nikon in the bag and the iPhone in my pocket. And then as I got to the bottom of the steps, there he was... There's not many places one would encounter this, but needless to say it is possible here.

Taken 10/7/2011 at the Roosevelt Island Station. This shot reminds me of looking for my sister on a day I knew she was traveling on the subway. I had a glimpse of her as the subway passed me and I ran to catch up with the car she was in. there she was looking up at me in surprise. That was one of the last times my sister ever took the subway. This image of the woman sitting in this shot - is so reminiscent of that particular moment.

This was taken just as Borders at Penn finally closed. Two things struck me about them--they were passionate about books and each other--not sure which was more powerful in this moment.

All of my subway photos are from 2001-2006. I had to take 2-3 trains to/from work daily. Photographing people and situations helped pass the time.

The No. 7 line runs above ground in Queens and has thrilling views of the City from the front car. This is an old photo, perhaps 29 years ago.

Prospect Park station, June 2009. You can always find a bit of green to soften up the iron and steel makeup of the New York subway system.

Coney Island, January 2007. I love the bleak feeling you get in winter at Coney Island. People unfamiliar with New York City get the impression that every square foot is packed with buildings and people. But you can always find a quiet spot in the right season.

Took it on the platform of the 6 train at GCT. I liked the way the platform and the support columns framed the photo.
