For all of our scientific advances, there are still many questions that remain unanswered. In the new book The Where, the Why, and the How, artists take a stab at explaining those mysteries. For this challenge, we asked you to create an illustration to answer the following question:
Are we alone in the universe?
I've been talking to my 3rd & 4th grade gifted/talented students about the vastness of space. After telling them of what I heard on NPR, they decided they wanted to participate in the Listener Challenge. All work is done on simple construction paper.
"Astronaut says, 'Houston, we're not alone in the universe!' NASA asks, 'Did you say that we aren't alone in the universe?' Astronaut says, 'Y-es!'" -Corbin

"No, we are not the only ones in the universe. We will find life some time. We may be closer than you think. Who knows? We could find a world just like ours. We could find new animals the same or find animals different. Maybe they have water, plants, trees, anything that on planet has." -Tyson

No, we are not "alone" in this vast universe. This collograph titled "Biological Cosmology 8" is part of a series expressing my belief that our own life forms developed from cosmic dust that entered our earth's atmosphere.

"It's no that we're alone. It's not that they're alone. Space is as vast as the sea, so I think we're not alone." -Dallen

"I believe we are not alone. An astronot looks over and He sees a giant creature's shadow approaching." -McKay

Titled "Unknown Life Forms 1", this is a collograph that is part of a series I've done expressing my belief that we are not "alone" in the universe.

"I think there is someone else out there. One orange is on earth, and the other orange out in space shows that we are not alone." -Lydia

This is a pen and ink illustration from a book for the Sketchbook Project titled "Below the Surface".

Just to consider the enormity of the question "Are we alone in the universe?" awakens a childlike sense of wonder. It was my intention to capture that feeling in this painting of my daughter at age 10, spinning Saturn on her finger, which I used for this recreation of a 1950s-era book. For the basis of the illustration, I scanned a copy of an actual vintage book titled "The Boy Scientist". I always wondered where its companion book "The Girl Scientist" was! Well, no one encouraged girls to be scientists back then, so I created an image of a book that I would love to have read when I was a girl.

Are we alone? Is there someone or something controlling and predetermining what exists and what will happen? Or are we are in control of ourselves and therefore are alone in our own destiny? It's up to each individual to decide.

THis is a photo illustration of my dog, Kim Brulee, who looks very much like an alien being, and a billboard in Albuquerque, NM (for Crystal Springs Water). Billboard greeting, "Greetings, Earthlings" was added by me.

My piece answers the question "Are we alone in the universe?" with "No." This piece aims to depict an unbeknownst life form in a different realm within, but distant, in the universe. The black square represents the universe as we see it on earth and the abrupt cut off where the galactical colors are seen represent another realm where the unknown life form resides.

There is not a correct way to view this drawing, as aliens appear in all forms in all ways. You will see new things as the picture is rotated.

"The Alien Blues"
In the middle of the Pacific Ocean an alien from Uranus landed where no one can find him. He was sad as ocean blue. He wanted to be found. The alien turns green when he's sad.

Did this for an amateur drawing class once exploring light, layers, and shadows. Now somehow it seems to resonate with the challenge.

It appeared to have come from a different dimension
