I took this photo while babysitting in Battery Park. I'd never seen a metropolis-meets-magical sunset view like this. I posted it on Instagram (@armstrongross) adding contrast but no filter. Nature needs no filter :)

This was part of a Halloween display on Bergen Street in Brooklyn. The homeowner is apparently a set designer, and does an elaborate display every year. This one caused controversy, as it depicted dolls and pumpkins undergoing various forms of torture. I found it funny and creative, but while I was photographing it a woman walked by and called it "child abuse."

We have a camp in the Adirondacks, in October while we were closing up our camp I took this picture of our boat sitting on the dock in the early morning mist. Our swim raft sits in the background. The bright orange strap make the picture. A few seconds later the shot was completely different, the mist lifted and the sun rose.

This photo is from the Audubon Aquarium of the Americas in New Orleans. It is of a moray eel and it is, I think, accurately, the funniest photograph I have ever taken and the funniest photograph I have ever seen, if not the funniest thing I have ever seen. I hope you share my great appreciation for this image. Thank you for all the excellent content in 2013; I'm looking forward to more in the new year. Regards, David

It's my 86 year old father, a life-long environmentalist, visiting the Gowanus canal, from England, last June. I think his face shows the mixture if horror and amusements he felt

I took this photo from my office the week after daylight savings changed and the new Freedom Tower was declared the tallest building in the country. I work in the Dept of Psychiatry at Interfaith Medical Center in Bed-Stuy, Brooklyn. The hospital filed for bankruptcy exactly one year ago, and we've been told that we're closing any day now for 6 months. It has been a long and stressful year for us. And even though everybody talks about LICH, nobody talks about Interfaith.
I took this photo because as I was working on my desk, I looked up and couldn't believe my eyes: There was this spectacular sunset! The colors literally took my breath away. And, there, in the distance (right hand side) was the sign of our freedom and hope. I don't know how much longer I'll have this job and this amazing view of my beloved city, but that moment reminded me that even when darkness is looming and eventually comes, there is still so much beauty around us.

I took this photo of a woman's tshirt in Austin, TX, on July 1st. I was in Austin for the rally at the State Capitol lead by Senator Wendy Davis and Planned Parenthood in support of conitinued access to basic medical care for TX women. Gov Perry had just shot down the bill that Davis worked so hard to pass to keep clinics open. Everyone thinks this is a fight for abortion, but it's not. 25% of the women in TX use Planned Parenthood as their primary care doctor. Now they have no one.

This was taken in July at a stupa in Kathmandu. As I was approaching the overlook a whole passel of Punjabi students walked up toe and asked if they could take a picture. They were so young and rambunctious and full of swagger- trying to play it so cool. I was totally tickled.

I took this photo in Otter Lake, a small hamlet within the town of Forestport in the Adirondack Park, in early January. It had just snowed earlier in the day and the sky was blue- a very rare thing in the Adirondacks in winter. My wife and I were driving to visit family when I noticed how blue the sky looked against the fresh snow. (Edited with Instagram)

One of my favorite events this year was Photoville at Brooklyn Bridge Park. Got to see some great work, but also just enjoyed the whole exhibit composed of shipping containers sitting in the park with lower Manhattan as a backdrop.

Returning to New York from a sunny vacation in Florida, it was good to be greeted by a pigeon at the LaGuardia baggage carousel. Reminded me why I love this city!
