This Week in Politics: Membership dwindles for New York City Council's progressive caucus

WNYC News | Feb 11, 2023

Over the last week, the New York City Council's Progressive Caucus - made up of members whose values align with the progressive wing of the Democratic Party - suddenly saw its membership dwindle. For some, a line in the new caucus statement of principles, "We will do everything we can to reduce the size and scope of the NYPD and the Department of Correction," was a deal-breaker.

The rancor among progressives on the Council, considered the largest bloc in the 51-member body, comes as its hard line members look to reinforce their values, setting up tensions heading into budget negotiations with Mayor Eric Adams.
