Robert Kapilow on Vivaldi
Evening Music | May 6, 2010
Host Robert Kapilow will be joined by Chee Yun and the Perspectives Ensemble at Walter Reade Theater on April 18th. Their goal: to let us in on “what makes it great,” as they elucidate Vivaldi in the Great Performers Series. But we can appreciate Vivaldi this very evening, as “La primavera” (Spring) receives a lilting and authentic performance by Giovanni Antonini and Il Giardino Armonico.
David Golub, perhaps more often heard from in his guise as a pianist, conducts the Padova Chamber Orchestra in Antonin Dvorák’s substantial Serenade for Strings in E, written after the 32-year-old composer had resolved to throw off the influence of Wagner and explore a more classical approach to composition.
Later we enjoy Maurizio Pollini, as he brings his usual panache to Beethoven’s Second Piano Concerto, while Eugen Jochum conducts the Vienna Philharmonic.
