When Felix Mendelssohn rediscovered Bach’s St. Matthew Passion, he completely flipped out, overcome with one of the most powerful and striking pieces of music ever written. Mendelssohn then staged a concert version of the work, the first for nearly 100 years, and the performance that sealed the passion as one of the most striking and powerful forms in classical music.
