Hubert Sumlin, Remembered

Friday, February 24, 2012

As the right-hand man to bluesman Howlin’ Wolf for more than 20 years, guitarist Hubert Sumlin was behind the tasty licks on classic tracks like “Spoonful” and “Smokestack Lightnin’” – earning him a reputation as one of the blues’ most legendary players. Hubert Sumlin died in December at the age of 80 – and tonight, his musical admirers join together in a benefit concert called “Howlin’ for Hubert” at the Apollo Theater. Chicago-based producer and historian Dick Shurman and blues singer Shemekia Copeland join us to remember the late artist’s career.
