Pressures adversely impact sleep patterns

:

I've tried to stay up later -- to be sure I'm really ready for sleep. Not sure it's working.

Not much. I sleep longer more often than I thought but the overall pattern is the same.

A problem with this survey is that it doesn't allow you to say how often you wake during the night. I wake frequently during the night so my sleep is interrupted and shallow a lot of the time. I am always tired and no, I do not have sleep apnea.

I seem to require between 7-8 hours of sleep at least. If I've gone to bed late on a work night, I will over-sleep until I get that amount. I rarely if ever have trouble falling asleep. Overall, I am a pretty healthy sleeper. I don't get as restful a sleep after drinking 3 or more alcoholic drinks.

:

I've tried to be mindful of when I drink caffeine in the afternoon and to avoid it if I can.

I realize that my sleep patterns are more regular than I thought. I had believed that my sleep schedule was very erratic.

:

No. But I felt bad about getting 8 or more hours of sleep. Now I just feel that I'm lucky.

they're pretty consistent and tend to be self balancing. If I fall short of 8-9 hours for a few days I make it up on the next few days. My caffeine patterns don't seem to affect my sleep patterns.

:

I always try to go to sleep earlier. I'm not very successful at that.
I always try to wake up earlier.
Ditto.

My bed partner would also like to improve his sleep, but won't follow any reasonable suggestions, such as limiting backlit screen time, alcohol, or food near bedtime.

In spite of that, his big sleep improvements have come as a result of wearing a sleep mask and taking either extract of hops or a custom brew of chicory, hot water, brown sugar, and (something else), about a half hour before bed.

That disruptions in sleep are less frequent than I thought I was having. I also feel best on 9 hours of sleep.

:

I'm a night owl by mature and I've tried to go to bed earlier, but unsucessfully. I'm unemployed right now (not by choice) so there's less motivation since I can sleep in.

When I do awake from time to time during the night (older guys do that) I am more aware of being awake, and this impacts on the ease with which I fall asleep again. I feel that my sleep is marginally worse since I started participating in the survey.

:

I learned that I probably am not getting enough sleep..as least at night.

:

There is no part of the survey that covers naps during the day. I am retired and have, for years, napped mid-day (hour and a half or so). However , more often than not I would awake from the nap feeling like crap! Groggy, dopey, and needing a cup of coffee to revive. Of late (pre-survey) I have been trying to limit the time napping to 20-30 mins.
To what extent- good or bad- does taking a nap impact on nocturnal sleep?

:

I wasn't getting as much sleep as I thought.

:

Started leaving the phone (aka my security blanket, or perhaps I should say, my insecurity blanket) in the kitchen... Though then I have to remember what time I turned the lights off to enter into the sleep study in the morning.

Also just before the sleep study started we ix-Nayed Netflix and the computer from the bedroom, so that's helped, too.

The tracking in concert with the reports about sleep have been informative and helpful. "I need to get more sleep" is a common thought, yet the inciteful, interactive and fun way it's been covered have helped me to change some habits. Hopefull it will persist after the study is over, and it won't all dissipate as the vapors of last night's dream.

I am actually getting more sleep than I thought. I still wake up sometimes in the middle of the night and don't always get back to sleep.
On one of your early sleep broadcasts someone said don't look at the clock...good advice, but now I am curious and want to know for the sleep study.

:

trying to stay up a little later and sleeping in the morning longer on days when I wake up between 3 and 4 a.m.
Also more aware of the effect of exercise...too much and I'm over tired, not enough I don't sleep well.

This is relatively new for me to be "tracking"; at this point, it's not clear if I've learned anything as regards sleep patterns - I know only too well what they are. I do wonder if I actually do sleep more than I think I do?

:

Not yet. My behaviors are not that bad, in a sense. As an example I have no smart phone, so there is minus that near my bed. I do,however, have a cell which I do not use except to see the time(s) I wake up in the course of the night and I use the clock for my morning meditation which I begin within 5 to 7 minutes of waking in order to get a sense of how many minutes I usually spend in meditation (25 - 30). I am not one of those whose life is dictated by "gadgets".
