After dropping my wife off at JFK for a pre-dawn flight one very foggy morning last January, I detoured to Coney Island. The fog was so thick, I was almost at the base of the Parachute Drop before I could even see it.

A padlocked ubiquitous Brooklyn church with an equally ubiquitous real estate placard, representing both the development and socio-economic shift in the city, particularly in this borough, over the last twenty years.

The East River in dense fog as viewed from my mother's window at the Goodman Brown Hospice, looking north from 95th St. Over the weeks my mother’s life ebbed, visitors took comfort in the steady presence of the river, the bridge, the boats, the little wooded isle, and the continuous play of light outside.

This was taken by my cell phone on the bay beach, called Duck Harbor, in Wellfleet Massachusetts on Cape Cod in July, 2014. People flock to this beach every evening when there is a glorious sunset.

Walking down 18th St in Brooklyn on a wet May afternoon, I stumbled across this abandoned umbrella. It was so perfectly placed with its little patch of sky, I couldn't resist.

This spectacular lavender sunset appeared over the Princeton (NJ) Shopping Center on the unusually balmy evening of Nov. 25. It drew people out of the stores to ooh and aah together, forgetting for the moment the troubles of the world, just wanting to share their awe of nature. Taken with an iPhone 4.

View from Lloyd Harbor beach, Long Island. Warm, sunny November day suddenly turned cooler and cloudy. Fog developed over the water.

A week of cold and grey weather in late September ended with clear skies for the Stairway to Heaven hike with my girlfriend of six years and high school prom date. A walk through some marsh land on this boardwalk leads to a cow pasture and, then, a several hundred foot climb to an outcropping overlooking the trail and Northern New Jersey.

This photo is proof that New Jersey can be absolutely beautiful. I took this on hike named "Stairway to Heaven" in Vernon Valley, New Jersey in early September. It was a week that was otherwise filled with cloudy, stormy, and cold weather. The beautiful scenery complimented the beautiful weather.

It's not necessary to travel far to view fall foliage. I teach at the College of Staten Island, CUNY, and I took this photo in September 2014

I rode the subway past 5pointz almost every day, but had never visited with my camera. A few days after much of the graffiti was painted over, I stopped and took this picture with my phone. One week later demolition began.

I'm an environmental artist and recently moved from New Jersey to Portland, Oregon. One of the main reasons I moved here is the connection this city has to the natural world. The park where I took this photo, Washington Park, is only a 10 to 15 minute walk from my downtown apartment. I usually come here a few times a week and I took this on one of my walks. There aren't too many cities concentrated in contemporary culture with this proximity to such natural beauty! On another note, this photo displays the typical winter weather here. A lot of people like to complain about the dreary environment, but I love it! It's comforting to know that I always have a park like this at my fingertips.

There used to be a slaughter house at apx 40th st and 11th avenue, up until the 1980's. The cornice had wonderful heads of rams, and cows and sheep on it. When the building was torn down, the heads disappeared. I came upon this cow head from the building recently, along with several of his fellow bovine, in storage crates on the bike path of Hudson River Park. I always make it a point to check on him when I go by; I do hope there are plans to save him and his buddies.
