Every year at this time, the Golden Festival brings the sounds, the dances, and the food of the Balkans to New York. And not just the Balkans: the Golden Festival is also the place to hear dozens of bands ranging from Scandinavian folk fiddling, polyphonic singing from the Republic of Georgia, or Ukrainian folk songs in a doom metal setting (hey, that's Zelenaya!). The festival was founded in 1986 by New York’s own Zlatne Uste Brass Band, who still organize this annual event each year. In one of their pieces, "Brazil Čoček", Zlatne Uste blends a traditional Serbian rhythm with a hint of South America. Zlatne Uste Golden Festival, "a celebration of community through music, dancing & art of the Balkans and beyond" - is Jan. 17 and 18 at Astoria World Manor.
