In the 1970s, the legendary Nigerian bandleader Fela Kuti, after whom the Broadway hit Fela! was named, created the funky, trancey style of music that became known as Afrobeat, with his band Afrika70. Now, drummer Jon Madof has taken that sound and married it to traditional Jewish melodies in his band Zion80. It’s an improbable pairing of musical influences, but a wildly colorful one. The band Zion80 are part of a cross-cultural, genre-hopping pre-Hanukkah show on Thurs., Dec. 12, at the club Drom.Â
