Twenty-five years ago, an unlikely friendship began - between a rock drummer Jim White of the Australian instrumental rock band Dirty Three and a musician from the Mediterranean island of Crete, George Xylouris, who plays the laouto, the traditional Cretan lute. They met when they were both living in Australia and now they tour the world as Xylouris White, playing a bewitching blend of traditional and original music, which is not quite Cretan folk music, not exactly rock, and despite their improvising, it's not jazz either.
Xylouris White plays Thursday night, April 18 and Friday night, April 19 at Joe's Pub. It's part of the “Onassis Festival 2019: Democracy Is Coming”.
