William Kentridge & Nhlanhla Mahlangu – Waiting for the Sibyl
Oct. 9. 8PM. $83. | Oct. 10, 7:30PM. $83. | Oct. 11 2PM, 7:30PM. $83.
South African artist and director William Kentridge has teamed up with composer Nhlanhla Mahlangu and a team of singers and dancers for a chamber opera called Waiting for the Sibyl. As the name implies, it’s inspired by the Greek myth about wanting to know the future, despite all the things that suggest that might not be a good idea. Kentridge’s definition of opera is a wide one – it encompasses his projected drawings, many of them animated, as well as film, shadow puppetry, and the sounds of South African choral music. William Kentridge’s multimedia theater piece Waiting for the Sibyl with the score by Nhlanhla Mahlangu and Kyle Shepherd opens Oct. 9 in Brooklyn at Powerhouse Arts and runs through Saturday, Oct. 11.
