Today, a judge in St. Louis, Missouri ruled former police officer Jason Stockley not guilty of first degree murder for the 2011 shooting death of the 24-year-old black man Anthony Lamar Smith.

Attorneys initially decided not to charge Stockley, who is white, but after an internal affairs investigation uncovered new evidence in 2016, he was charged with first degree murder.

Activists have threatened protests if the verdict was not guilty, and several schools were closed and barricades erected outside the courthouse in anticipation of the decision.

Shula Neuman, the executive editor at St. Louis Public Radio, weighs in on the case.
