Welfare Workers Work-In

The NYPR Archive Collections | Jan 1, 2000

TV show audio where a panel of journalists moderated by NBC's Jim Hartz interview Deputy Mayor Robert W. Sweet. Topics include the visit of Russian Premier Alexis Kosygin and the possible "work-in" by the welfare workers union, which Sweet describes as a "dangerous situation," alluding to its relationship to current racial tension. The issues at hand, Sweet claims, are not fit for fact-finding, but for mediation.

The deputy mayor also discusses summer task forces, to which the private sector has contributed tremendously, and which will include local and police collaborations to try to keep summer racial tensions "cool."
