This Week in Politics: An NYC Primary Primer

WNYC News | Sep 9, 2017

The primary in the New York City mayor's race is this Tuesday. But we can still squeeze in a last-minute refresher on WNYC's This Week in Politics.

Mayor Bill de Blasio is up against four Democratic challengers: Sal Albanese, Richard Bashner, Robert Gangi and Michael Tolkin. Mara Gay, who covers City Hall for The Wall Street Journal, joins us for a lightning round on the candidates.

We also look back on a week that featured the second of two debates between de Blasio and Albanese... and some in-your-face personal attacks on the mayor courtesy of the only Republican in the race, Nicole Malliotakis.

Speaking with host David Furst, Mara says that the attacks were likely just a taste of what may be in store for the general election. "The ugly rhetoric is something that we've seen, certainly, in Washington — and you're gonna see it in New York as well," she says.

WNYC is partnering with Gotham Gazette and City Limits on election 2017 coverage.
