Weed Science: Its Effect on the Metropolitan Area
André Bernard talks to a panel of scientists about the field of weed science, and its effect on those living in metropolitan areas.
The members of the panel are:
Dr. Samuel Schenberg, Director of Science of the Board of Education of NYC Schools
Mr. Otto Burgdorf, Chairman of the Department of Biological Sciences at William Cullen Bryant High School, Queens
Dr. John A. Meade, President of the Northeastern Weed Control Conference and Affiliated with Rutgers University
Dr. Homer Lebaron of the Geigy Agricultural Chemicals Corporation
Dr. Meade begins by defining a weed as "any plant that is growing where it is not wanted." The panelists discuss topics in weed science such as the safety of insecticides and herbicides, how the ecology of an area is affected and natural methods to control pests. They conclude the conversation by describing employment opportunities for students in this field of study.
The panel was recorded on the second day of the Northeastern Weed Control Conference taking place at the Commodore Hotel in New York City.
