The Walter Thompson Orchestra looks like a jazz band, but what Walter Thompson does looks like a cross between sign language and conducting. Thompson calls what he does Soundpainting, and he’s developed a series of gestures that his orchestra translates into music. He’s also been known to turn around and conduct the audience, and you’d be surprised how quickly you catch on to what each gesture means. There’s a sense of play in much of Thompson’s music – in a piece named after the famous game show host, Bob Barker. The Walter Thompson Orchestra performs their conducted improvisations May 29 and 30, at the Gemini & Scorpio Loft in Brooklyn, as part of The Live Composition Festival 2019.
