WNYC's public service series with NYC Department of Correction.

The Classification Board ([not listed] Dr. Harold R. Fox, Psychiatrist, Riker's Island Penitentiary; Captain Jerome Adler, Captain in charge of classification and assignment at Riker's Island; George E. Mears, Probation Officer, Kings County; Milton B. Lewis, Assistant Director of Education, Riker's Island; Norman M. Stone, Correction Department Executive Secretary; Dr. Bertram Pollens, Executive Secretary, New York Consultation Center; Dr. Harold R. Fox, Psychiatrist, Riker's Island Penitentiary) discusses an unintroduced case.

Stone: Who could we assign him to?

Mears: He could be a clerk for a correction officer. He will take on an attachment.

Stone: We must caution all members of the staff of his needs. What type of mechanical skill should he receive?

Unidentified: Sheet metal experience.

Adler: Machine shop is more secure.

Pollens: Emotional makeup in terms of a suitable assignment. Auto mechanics would be wiser than sheet metal because it lends itself to freelancing and individualization, more of an opportunity to work for himself.

Fox: Severe behavior disorder, bordering on psychopathic disorder. He is fighting his way through life instead of trying to understand people.

Mears: He attends church regularly. At 19, the crossroads of his life, his experience in the institution will determine how serious he becomes in his antisocial behavior.

Lewis: Courses in journalism and English. If he is given the opportunity to express himself, he might prove to have a bit of talent along those lines.

Pollens: Post institutional program?

Stone: Too soon!
