Undocumented Workers Contributed $1.2 Billion To Unemployment Funds, Report Says

WNYC News | Jun 17, 2020

Undocumented workers have contributed $1.2 billion dollars into federal and state unemployment insurance over the last 10 years. They just don't benefit from it. That's according to a new report by New Jersey Policy Perspective.

"Not providing for folks that have lost employment at no fault of their own is going to slow the recovery for everyone," said Vineeta Kapahi, a policy analyst for the research group. "The economic viability of local businesses and our state and local economies are very much contingent on everyone being supported during this time and not leaving anyone behind."

Kapahi is calling on the state to step in and create a fund to support undocumented workers.

Labor unions and immigrant advocacy groups are holding a rally later on Wednesday in Trenton to demand lawmakers take action.
