Tracking Inequality Among Covid-19 Patients

While the city has released the breakdown of COVID-19 patients among racial and ethnic groups, our Gothamist team looked at how in neighborhoods with different median incomes are being impacted by the outbreak. WNYC/Gothamist found a clear correlation: the richer neighborhoods in Manhattan have the lowest per capita rates of COVID infection. Poorer neighborhoods have the highest rates.

Gothamist publisher Jake Dobkin spoke with WNYC's Jami Floyd to explain the data break down of numbers. "We know that poorer neighborhoods do have a poorer health indicators, some of the comes from less access to medical care, less access to fresh food, more exposure to pollution. But we, also, know that these neighborhoods have a much higher percentage of service workers."
