Thomas S. Buechner, Director of the Brooklyn Museum of Art

The NYPR Archive Collections | Jan 1, 2000

On this inaugural episode of World of the Arts, Robert W. Dowling, Cultural Executive of New York City's Office of Cultural Affairs interviews Thomas S. Buechner, Director of the Brooklyn Museum of Art.

They discuss the history of the museum from humble beginnings as the Brooklyn Apprentices' Library in Brooklyn Heights. Buechner gives a "quick tour" of the museum and discusses collecting areas, particularly Egyptian Art, and an upcoming touring exhibition "The Gold of Alexander."

They also discuss public programs offered by the museum such as the acoustic guide, educational programming for children as well as adults, and an industrial design program that allows designers to study collections that are not on view.

Dowling presses Buechner on the subject of museum hours offered at night so that more New Yorkers and visitors can attend. They get into a semi-debate about how feasible that is, and Dowling promises to fund from the Office of Cultural Affairs
