How high can you sing? There are 8 billion humans on earth but only a handful who can hit the extreme high notes required by English composer and conductor Thomas Ades in his operas. When a soprano sings that high, she almost doesn’t sound human. And in this opera, Ades’s version of Shakespeare’s The Tempest, that’s the whole point: the character of Ariel is a spirit, not a human. The Tempest, by Thomas Ades is the free opera stream from the Met on Monday, Dec. 7, featuring a cast that has Audrey Luna singing those stratospheric high notes.
