There Was More To The Story: A Look At A Police Shooting Deemed Justified And What Went Wrong

WNYC News | Dec 4, 2020

Police encounters with the mentally ill have plagued police departments across the country for decades.

We're going to take a moment to look back at a fatal shooting of a 32- year-old black man by the NYPD. You might remember him. His name was Kawaski Trawick. He struggled with mental health and drug issues and he was killed at his home in the Bronx last year. The NYPD said he was armed with a knife, that he charged at the police, and the shooting was justified.

Eric Umansky is Deputy Managing editor at ProPublica and he dug deep into that fatal shooting to examine what went wrong. He joined host Sean Carlson on WNYC's All Things Considered to discuss what he learned.
