The Studio Museum in Harlem

The NYPR Archive Collections | Jan 1, 2000

On this episode of Black Industrial Revolution moderator Raymond C. Turner interviews Artist Tom Lloyd about his exhibit, Electronic Refractions II, at the new Studio Museum in Harlem. Joining him are the Administrative Director Charles Inniss and Board of Trustees Member Betty Blayton.

Lloyd talks about his work and the mission of the museum to create opportunities for black artists who serve as mentors to young artists in the Harlem community. He implores black artists to be more involved with politics. Blayton comments on the lack of opportunities for black artists and hopes that the museum will open the Harlem neighborhood to the greater New York area and, eventually, the world. Lloyd agrees that black artists have been "sort of raped" by the art world and criticizes museums for not being inclusive to black visitors. Turner asks Innis about the business aspects of running a museum and financial contributions. Innis describes a planned membership program and upcoming exhibitions.
