January 6 Committee Recommends Charges for Trump; NYPD Update; Weinstein Guilty, Again; Your Stories About Defying the Odds

The Brian Lehrer Show | Dec 20, 2022

On today's show:

  • At its final public meeting, the January 6 committee recommended criminal charges for former President Trump. Jacqueline Alemany, Congressional investigations reporter for The Washington Post and contributor to NBC News and MSNBC, recaps the day and explains whether the DOJ must act on the recommendations or not.
  • On Friday, a federal court settlement barred the NYPD from detaining people to check for warrants. And in November, the department appointed a new acting chief, the agency’s highest uniformed rank. Chelsia Rose Marcius, reporter covering criminal justice and breaking news at The New York Times, offers a roundup of these stories and more from the past year at the NYPD.
  • Former movie mogul and now convicted criminal Harvey Weinstein was convicted of sex crimes, including rape, again yesterday - though it was a mixed verdict. Jane Manning, director, Women's Equal Justice Project and former sex crimes prosecutor, talks about why he was acquitted of another charge and the jury couldn't decide on others, and what this case means for the future of sex crime prosecutions.
  • In honor of Hanukkah, listeners of all faiths describe a time when, despite the odds stacked against them, they 'miraculously' triumphed.

Transcripts are posted to each segment as they become available.
