The Brian Lehrer Show | Jul 20, 2020

Coming up on today's show:

  • Jonathan Capehart, member of The Washington Post editorial board, host of the “Cape Up” podcast and an MSNBC contributor, remembers the civil rights leader and Congressman John Lewis, who died last week, and talks about the latest news coming out of Washington.
  • In recent weeks, New York City has seen a spike in gun violence. As of Monday, July 13th, there were 648 shootings across the city, up from 399 last year. New York City Council Member Robert Cornegy (36th District, representing Bedford-Stuyvesant and northern Crown Heights in Brooklyn) talks about the recent increase in shootings, including one in Bed-Stuy earlier this month that took the life of a one-year-old boy.
  • Regina Smith, executive director of the Harlem Business Alliance, talks about the systemic reasons Black businesses are excluded from programs like the PPP, and what that means for the community.
  • Listeners call in to share their experiences with having COVID-19, and Brian Lehrer Show associate producer Amina Srna shares information on how the pandemic has thrown the census a curveball.
