Susie Ibarra's Sky Islands at Asia Society
July 18 and July 20. 7:30PM. $30.
Susie Ibarra has established herself as a percussionist and composer on the contemporary music scene, bringing to New York the sounds of the traditional gong ensembles of the southern Philippines and championing Indigenous cultures from around the world. Her new project, Sky Islands, is inspired by the Filipino rainforest and uses interlocking rhythms and melodies to draw attention to the threat posed by climate change. Susie Ibarra and the Extended Filipino Talking Gong Ensemble with Claire Chase on flute, Alex Peh on piano, and Levy Lorenzo and Ibarra on percussion, are joined by the four-member Bergamot Quartet comprising violinists Ledah Finck and Sarah Thomas, violist Amy Huimei Tan and cellist Irène Han as they play the world premiere performances of the full work on July 18 and July 20 at Asia Society.
