The legendary Latin Jazz percussionist Tito Puente was famous as a timbale player, but he got his start as a vibraphonist and was considered one of the original mambo kings. Percussionist and vibes player Felipe Fournier is a Costa Rican musician now based here in New York who navigates between jazz and salsa and occasionally assembles the group he calls Supermambo. Their past concerts have included a tribute to Tito Puente, but on Tues., July 20, Supermambo presents original songs telling the story of a Latin superhero, fusing the world of the comic book with the sound of Salsa, at Gantry Plaza State Park, overlooking the East River in Long Island City.
