Sunny Jain's Wild Wild East and Gamelan Dharma Swara at Bryant Park
Aug. 15. 7PM. FREE
Manhattan’s Bryant Park is presenting a potent double bill of New York bands rooted in the sounds of South and Southeast Asia on Friday evening, Aug. 15. Sunny Jain, best known for his Punjabi dance band Red Baraat, will lead his Wild Wild East ensemble in an up-tempo blend of global pop styles, and Gamelan Dharma Swara will present the explosive, dramatic rhythms of Balinese gamelan music. Over the past 36 years, the Queens-based group has played new works written for this collection of shimmering, mostly metallic percussion instruments; but they also play traditional gamelan pieces like the one, called “Kebyar Legong.” Gamelan Dharma Swara plays on Aug. 15 in a free double bill concert at Bryant Park.
