A new book revisits the days before antibiotics, when tuber­culosis killed one in seven patients. During that time, Sea View, New York’s largest municipal hospital, recruited Black southern nurses to work at the hospital after white nurses quit en masse. The book is titled, Black Angels: The Untold Story of the Nurses Who Helped Cure Tuberculosis. Author Maria Smilios joins us to discuss.
