Friends and Lovers at 7PM, $15

Like many gospel and soul groups in the South in the 70s, the Staples Jr Singers were a family band. Not THAT family – although they took their name because they were big fans of the Staples Singers. No, the Staples Jr. Singers were three siblings from the Brown family in Aberdeen, Mississippi. They played locally as teenagers, and recorded an album in the mid 70s called, somewhat cheekily, When Do We Get Paid? Well, they’ve waited a half century for the pay off, but that album is now being re-released, and now, 40 years after they last performed together, the Staples Jr Singers are coming to New York for the first time ever, and they’ve lost none of their soulful funky energy. The Staples Jr. Singers perform three times Saturday, April 23 in three different Brooklyn venues, a Gospel Brunch at Baby's All Right, The Lot Radio, and at Friends and Lovers – the brunch and afternoon shows will be short and free.
