South Africa has a long, strong tradition of choral singing, and the Soweto Gospel Choir has been one of the leading groups in that style. Multiple Grammy-winners and the recipients of a Sports Emmy, the members of the choir have released an album recently called Freedom, which marks the 100th anniversary of Nelson Mandela’s birth. The South African group performs a tribute to Nelson Mandela as well as holiday soul on Saturday night, Dec. 8, at the Staller Center in Stony Brook on Long Island, and on Sunday afternoon, Dec. 9, at the Lehman Center in the Bronx.
