They started as a street band in Mexico City, but Son Rompe Pera has attracted attention as far south as Chile. And why not – they have a distinctive sound, starting with three brothers who all play marimbas and including elements of punk, ska, pop, and the ubiquitous Latin dance rhythm called cumbia. Their song "Cumbia Algarrobera" comes from Son Rompe Pera’s album Batuco, an album named after the band’s father, who was also a marimba player.
Son Rompe Pera plays on Friday night, Aug. 20 at Gold Sounds and then Sat., Aug. 21 at the annual Barbès In the Woods festival in Western Massachusetts.
