Siegfried Landau, Music Director and Conductor of the Brooklyn Philharmonia
On this episode of World of the Arts, Dr. E.W. Doty interviews Siegfried Landau, Music Director and Conductor of the Brooklyn Philharmonia. After 11 years, Landau reflects on precedents and setbacks to forming a philharmonic orchestra for New York's most populous borough. Landau discusses the "Youth Concerts" program, free concerts for students intended to cultivate an appreciation for orchestral music, particularly modern and contemporary music. After each season Landau meets with teachers, parents, and students to ascertain which pieces were successful and measure how tastes have changed.
"That is the interesting thing is that once you make contact, musical contact, that you really teach youngsters to listen to music, then you create a language which you can share, and that is then starting point to styles, and then they accept your Mozart later."
The Brooklyn Philharmonia became the Brooklyn Philharmonic Orchestra in 1982.
