Sheriff's Home Vandalized In Wake of ICE Protests and Detainee Hunger Strike
Police are investigating vandalism at the home of Bergen County Sheriff Anthony Cureton, who has been the focus of protests in recent days over the county's detention contract with Immigration and Customs Enforcement.
"Free them all" was painted in black on Cureton's garage. And red paint was splashed on his driveway. Cureton, a Democrat, believes the incident is related to ongoing protests at the Bergen County Jail, which he runs. About 40 percent of the people held at the jail are ICE detainees, through a detention contract between the sheriff's office and the federal government.
A handful of those detainees have been on hunger strike for nearly a month. Their complaints about conditions and demands to be released while awaiting immigration court decisions have brought protesters to the jail on a near-daily basis.
The incident comes as another ICE controversy rages in neighboring Hudson County, where the county executive secured a restraining order to keep protesters away from his home and forbid them from protesting more than two hours a month.
