Two hundred years ago, Franz Schubert wrote a famous set of songs called Winterreise – winter journey. Now, composer Douglas Cuomo has used those same poems, only in an English translation, as the basis for his new one-act music theater piece called "Savage Winter." The poems tell a story of a man wandering through a winter landscape after the end of a love affair, but at some point the literal winter journey becomes a metaphoric voyage into existential despair. They inspired some of Schubert’s most bleak and beautiful music, and Cuomo’s piece calls for a tenor, supported by a small onstage ensemble with electronics to evoke this cold, dark story.

"Savage Winter," by Douglas Cuomo is part of BAM’s Next Wave Festival, opening Wed., Nov. 7 and running through Saturday, Nov. 10.
