New York sax player Rudresh Mahanthappa is a versatile musician and composer – he is as comfortable playing jazz as he is the classical or Carnatic music of South India. And his own compositions often draw on both, even the pieces he writes for chamber music groups like the Prism quartet. But now Mahanthappa is doing something different with his trio of sax, bass, and drums. They’re playing music associated with the legendary sax player Charlie Parker, doing their own reinventions of songs that Parker famously played. The Rudresh Mahanthappa Trio plays at least two sets per night Aug. 25-28 at Smoke, the uptown jazz club.
