To Reduce Bias, NYC Public Hospitals Changing How It Screens Pregnant Women for Drug Use

New York City Health and Hospitals Corporation is working to change how it screens pregnant women for substance use. The changes being drafted are meant to reduce racial and cultural bias. Mothers and advocacy groups have reported that pregnant women of color are screened more often than white women — and the tests have sometimes led to unwarranted child welfare investigations and family separations.
