Previewing the 2016 Baseball Season

WNYC News | Apr 4, 2016

Baseball season kicked off Sunday with the Mets falling to the Royals in a World Series rematch. The Yankees kick off their season in the Bronx Tuesday when they take on the Houston Astros.

Though the Mets didn't get off to the best start, the National League champions have a phenomenal young pitching staff that should work to their advantage going forward, said Sports Illustrated senior editor Emma Span..

"They have probably the best rotation in the league right now," she said.

The Yankees had one of the best offenses in baseball last year, largely due to resurgent seasons from 40-year-old Alex Rodriguez and 35-year-old Mark Teixeira. But whether the veterans have enough in the tank to help carry the offense one more time remains to be seen.

"It's very tough to count on a 40-year-old in baseball to carry your offense," Span said. "But that's where they are. And if anyone can do it, Alex Rodriguez, for all the scandal around his steroid use, is still one of the best players of all time."

Commissioner Rob Manfred will be joined by former New York baseball stars John Franco and Willie Randolph to commemorate opening day by ringing the closing bell at the New York Stock Exchange Monday.

Span spoke to WNYC's Richard Hake.
