Press Conference in UN Headquarters with U Thant

T2233 and T2234

Mr. Ragavand leads the questions from the press corps.

U Thant expresses confidence in the UN as more than a forum for debate.

His position on Vietnam has not changed. First priority is the cessation of the bombing of North Vietnam. Until that occurs, he will suspend his personal efforts about the war. The countries sympathetic to Hanoi (China and USSR) are probably sending volunteers.

Arab - Israeli dispute will have to be arbitrated by UN until they can negotiate directly. He doesn't suggest priorities because both General Assembly and Security Council are dealing with the issue.

He declares that the UN will supervise elections in any country. The GA must make the decision to do so before the Secretary General can recommend a commitment to do so.

UN will not deal with Vietnam as long as one big member of the Security Council objects.

He predicts the General Assembly will not admit the Peoples Republic of China.
